The best places to propose in Lisbon

Ten places we love for a proposal in and around Lisbon, with the best time to go, how busy they get and what kind of setup each one allows.

Lisbon has more beautiful views than almost any city in Europe, but not every beautiful spot is a good place to propose. Some are packed from morning to night, some face the wrong way at sunset, and some don't allow decoration at all. These are the places we suggest most often, and what to know about each.

1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Graça

Lisbon's highest viewpoint looks across the whole city: the castle, the Baixa, the river and the bridge in the distance. At sunset the rooftops turn gold. It's the classic Lisbon proposal view.

  • Best time: The last hour before sunset
  • Crowds: Busy at sunset, so we pick the moment carefully
  • Setup: Small and discreet: flowers, a few lanterns, a hidden photographer

2. Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol

Alfama

Blue-and-white tiles, a pergola covered in bougainvillea and a view over Alfama's rooftops to the river. Crowded later in the day, but almost empty at sunrise, when the first light comes across the water.

  • Best time: Sunrise
  • Crowds: Very busy from mid-morning
  • Setup: Small and secret, perfect for a quiet sunrise proposal

3. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara

Bairro Alto

A garden terrace with a fountain and busts, looking across the valley to the castle. Lovely in the late afternoon, when the light falls on the hill opposite.

  • Best time: Late afternoon
  • Crowds: Busy, with a lively atmosphere
  • Setup: Small touches only

4. Jardim do Torel

Above Avenida da Liberdade

A small, hidden garden on the hill with a view over the city. Most visitors walk straight past it, which is exactly why we like it.

  • Best time: Late afternoon or sunset
  • Crowds: Usually quiet
  • Setup: A small picnic or a bouquet and a hidden photographer

5. Cais das Colunas and Praça do Comércio

Baixa

Marble steps lead straight into the Tagus from Lisbon's grandest square. At sunrise the square is empty and the river is calm; by midday it's full.

  • Best time: Sunrise
  • Crowds: Quiet early, very busy later
  • Setup: Simple: the view does the work

6. The Belém riverside

Belém

Gardens, a long promenade and the river opening towards the ocean, with Belém Tower in the distance. Spacious and relaxed, and easy to combine with a celebration afterwards.

  • Best time: Sunset
  • Crowds: Moderate
  • Setup: A picnic on the grass or a walk along the river

7. A rooftop or restaurant terrace

Across the city

The most private way to propose in central Lisbon: a reserved table above the rooftops, flowers and candles, and dinner to follow. It works in any season, and covered terraces work in any weather.

  • Best time: Evening
  • Crowds: Private
  • Setup: A table full of flowers and candles

8. Sintra: Monserrate or the Pena park

Sintra, 40 minutes away

Palaces, lakes and gardens from a fairy tale. Monserrate is the quietest; the park around Pena Palace has the famous view. Professional photography needs advance authorisation, which we arrange.

  • Best time: Morning
  • Crowds: Busy from late morning
  • Setup: Small in the public parks; bigger in a private quinta. See proposals in Sintra

9. Cabo da Roca

Sintra coast

Cliffs, a lighthouse and the open Atlantic at the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Unforgettable at sunset, as long as the wind is kind.

  • Best time: Sunset
  • Crowds: Moderate, mostly tour groups
  • Setup: Simple: the setting is the setup

10. A beach near Cascais or on the Costa da Caparica

The coast

The rose heart and the MARRY ME letters belong on the sand. The quieter beaches around Cascais and the long Atlantic beaches south of the river, where the sun sets over the ocean, are our favourites.

  • Best time: Sunset
  • Crowds: Quiet outside July and August
  • Setup: The full setup, with permission where it's needed. See proposals in Cascais

When to propose: sunrise, golden hour and sunset by month

Most of our proposals happen in the evening golden hour. If you'd like a viewpoint to yourselves, sunrise is the secret alternative. Times below are for the 15th of each month.

How to choose

Start with your partner. Would they love an audience, or would it make them want to disappear? A busy viewpoint at sunset feels very different from an empty garden at sunrise. Then think about the setup you want: big setups need a beach, a garden or a private terrace, while the public viewpoints suit something small and discreet. If you're not sure, tell us about your partner and we'll suggest two or three places that fit.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Where is the most romantic place to propose in Lisbon?

For the classic view over the city, Miradouro da Senhora do Monte at sunset. For privacy, a rooftop terrace or a quiet garden such as the Jardim do Torel. For a big setup like a rose heart, a beach near Cascais or on the Costa da Caparica.

Is it allowed to decorate a viewpoint in Lisbon?

Small, discreet touches are usually fine. A big setup on a busy public viewpoint usually isn't possible or allowed, which is why we suggest beaches, gardens and private venues for those.

What time of day is best for a proposal?

The last hour before sunset for warm light, or sunrise if you want a famous viewpoint almost to yourselves.
